The Challenge

In the future, we foresee a change in the exit and entry experience of the home. With the increase of individualism and hybrid working, the purpose and use of an entryway could change. It is assumed that there could be less communication between the inhabitants of the house due to increased individualism, and the timing and occurrences of passages in the hallway are harder to predict with hybrid working becoming the new norm. In this, we see a design opportunity to support inhabitants in their exit and entry rituals.

The Solution

Ipsum acknowledges and supports the different emphasis of the entry and exit experience. By collecting data regarding the status of the house, our aim is to give inhabitants more insight into the status of their home, including actions required when transitioning between inside and outside. To realize this, Ipsum is a kinetic wall sculpture in the hallway that through an abstract and data-enabled range of movements, sounds, and light animations, allows inhabitants to become more aware of the state of their house when entering or leaving. Ipsum serves as a personification of the house, connecting users with their home environment.
